Backup to Cloudflare R2 with Iperius



Iperius Backup allows you to perform backups to  Cloudflare R2 , Cloudflare’s distributed object storage. R2 offers an S3-compatible endpoint and fully supports the S3 API, allowing Iperius Backup to use S3 keys to securely store data. Cloudflare R2 uses an automatic virtual “region” (no additional configuration) and does not charge data egress fees, thus offering cost-effective, scalable, and high-performance offsite storage. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through how to configure Iperius Backup to use Cloudflare R2 as a backup destination, step by step.

Cloudflare R2 Setup

  1. Creating an R2 bucket :
    Log in to the Cloudflare Dashboard, select  Storage & Databases > R2 > Overview , then click  Create bucket .  Choose a unique name and specify a location (you can leave it as “Automatic”). Confirm with Create bucket.

  1. Generating R2 Credentials :
    Still in the Cloudflare R2 Dashboard, go to API Tokens. Click Create API Token  or  Manage API Tokens , choose  “Object Read & Write”  as the permission, and  limit the token to the newly created bucket. Give it a recognizable name and create the token. Once created, the Access Key ID and Secret Access Key will be displayed: copy them immediately and store them in a safe place, as they will no longer be visible. The token is ready for use.

You now have an active R2 bucket with valid S3 credentials: Access Key ID, Secret Key, and Service Endpoint URL.

Configuring Iperius Backup for Cloudflare R2

  1. Create a new backup job: Start Iperius Backup and click Create a new backup . Add the files, folders, or items to save to the cloud (folders, databases, VMs, etc.) using the corresponding buttons in the  Items panel.

  2. Add R2 Cloud Destination : In the Destinations window, select  Add New Cloud Account. The account setup window will open.

    Enter the R2 parameters as follows:

    Click Save to save the account. If the credentials are correct, the R2 account will appear in the Iperius Backup cloud account list.

  3. Set up bucket and backup options: Configure the backup settings for saving files to the Cloudflare R2 cloud destination. Select the account you just created, then choose the bucket name, backup type (full, incremental, differential), and any other options (zip compression, AES 256-bit encryption, sync, etc.). Click “OK” to save the destination and proceed.

  4. Scheduling and Completion : After adding the R2 destination, set up the job schedule via the dashboard (e.g., automatic backup every night). Configure any email notifications . Give the job a descriptive name and save the job. The backup is now ready. You can test it right away.
