Reolink and Iperius: Integrated video surveillance with Cloud FTPS and Automatic Backup
Implementing an advanced and secure video surveillance infrastructure is now possible by combining the latest generation IP cameras with cloud services and dedicated video backup software. In this article we will see how to create an integrated system using Reolink cameras (with AI functions), Iperius Storage cloud space via FTPS protocol and Iperius Backup software for Windows PC. This solution allows you to save surveillance footage in real time on the cloud securely and then automatically download it locally for further processing or additional backup copies. All this while ensuring GDPR compliance , data sovereignty (EU infrastructure) and maximum reliability.
Reolink AI Cameras with Secure FTPS Upload
Reolink IP cameras are known for their advanced AI detection system that can distinguish between human, vehicle, and even pet movements . This means the system can filter out false alarms (like leaves blowing in the wind) and only generate alerts when relevant events occur. For example, Reolink’s latest series of cameras can recognize a person or vehicle in the frame and only trigger recording when that happens.
When an event is detected (based on the object types configured by the user), the camera will record a video clip of the event and can automatically save it to a remote FTP/FTPS server ( How to Set up FTP for Reolink Products ). This upload feature is built into the Reolink camera settings: through the Reolink mobile app or desktop client, you can set the connection parameters to an external FTP server and define an upload schedule (continuous or motion-only). The key thing is that the latest Reolink cameras also support FTPS (FTP over SSL) , which is encrypted file upload to the cloud server ( New Feature Explained-FTPS Only in AI New Firmware v3.1.0764 | Reolink Community ). Basically, by enabling the “FTPS Only” option in the latest firmware, the camera will use a secure and encrypted FTP connection to the server (without this option, it will try FTPS but fall back to unencrypted FTP if the server does not support it). This ensures that videos are transferred over the network in a secure manner, preventing interception or unauthorized access during upload.

Another advantage of Reolink is the flexibility in scheduling : the user can define time slots to enable FTP upload (e.g. only at night or on weekends) and choose whether to upload videos, images or both upon each event. For AI models, you can also specify which detection types trigger the upload (only people, vehicles, etc.). This means that the infrastructure will only send targeted clips to the cloud (e.g. only when there is a human intruder), optimizing the space and bandwidth used. In the event of an intrusion or incident, the related video is immediately copied to a remote storage. This approach is extremely useful to ensure that even if the local camera/NVR is tampered with or stolen, the critical recordings are safe on an external cloud .
Iperius Storage: Cloud FTPS in EU for Surveillance and GDPR
Once the cameras send the footage to an FTP server, you need to choose a reliable storage service that natively supports the FTPS protocol . Many traditional cloud services do not offer direct FTP/FTPS access, forcing you to use proprietary APIs or complex integrations. Iperius Storage stands out because it provides cloud space that is directly accessible via FTPS natively, making it perfect for integration with IP cameras. In other words, a Reolink camera can upload videos directly to Iperius Storage without the need for gateways or intermediate software, using the secure FTP protocol supported by the service.
Iperius Storage is designed for professional backup and archiving applications, and offers several key advantages for a cloud video surveillance system:
- Native FTPS Support – The service accepts FTPS connections out-of-the-box, allowing cameras to transfer clips securely (SSL) and without complications. This eliminates any risks of using clear FTP and simplifies compatibility with existing surveillance devices.
- Infrastructure entirely in the EU, excellent for GDPR and data sovereignty – The data uploaded to Iperius Storage resides in high-security European data centers, certified ISO 27001 and Tier IV level. This means that surveillance videos do not leave Europe, facilitating compliance with GDPR regulations on the protection of personal data and ensuring data sovereignty (no external jurisdiction can request access). Furthermore, servers in the EU reduce latency and ensure high standards of security and privacy.
- High reliability and guaranteed uptime – The Iperius Storage cloud platform is designed to offer a continuous and robust service. The architecture in the certified data centers mentioned above implies infrastructure redundancy and disaster recovery plans, resulting in guaranteed uptime and protection of stored files. For the user, this translates into the certainty that surveillance videos will always be accessible when needed, without interruptions. Iperius Storage is in fact a highly reliable and professional service, used as a backup backend by numerous companies.
In addition to these points, it is worth mentioning that Iperius Storage offers authentication with dedicated credentials (username/password FTPS) and can be scaled according to needs (space from tens of GB to several TB). Few other cloud services offer this combination of native FTP(S) and enterprise-level European cloud infrastructure. This makes Iperius Storage an ideal choice as a cloud “virtual video recorder” for our Reolink cameras. Event footage (alarms) is immediately stored on the remote cloud space in a secure way: even if the local device were to be damaged, we would have an intact copy on Iperius Storage ready to consult or download.

Automatic local video backup with Iperius Backup
Once the surveillance footage is stored on Iperius Storage, you can implement an additional level of protection and versatility using Iperius Backup . Iperius Backup is a very flexible backup software for Windows, which supports numerous destinations (NAS, cloud, FTP, etc.) and backup modes (full, incremental, synchronization, etc.). In this context, we will use it to automatically download videos from the Iperius Storage cloud to a local PC or Server , thus creating a local copy, useful as a backup or for any additional video processing.
Download videos via FTPS in incremental mode
Iperius Backup allows you to configure an “FTP Download” type job : in practice, you create a backup task in which the source is a remote FTP/FTPS server (Iperius Storage in our case) and the destination is a local folder on the PC or NAS. The configuration procedure is relatively simple: you add a new job and choose the special “FTP Download” element as the source. At that point you enter the FTP connection data of the account (host, port, credentials) and specify that it is FTPS – Iperius Backup in fact fully supports FTPS (SSL/TLS up to 1.3) and also SFTP, guaranteeing maximum security in transmissions. After testing the connection, you select the local destination folder in which to save the downloaded files.

A very important feature is the ability to download in incremental/synchronized mode . This means that when the job is started for the first time, the software will download all the files present on the remote FTP space, while on subsequent runs it will only download new or modified files . In practice, Iperius Backup keeps the local folder aligned with the cloud folder without duplicating data already downloaded previously. This incremental approach optimizes time and bandwidth: every day (or with the set frequency) only the new videos generated by the cameras will be downloaded, for example the latest motion detection clips uploaded to Iperius Storage. Files already downloaded in the past will remain locally (unless they are removed manually or with specific retention policies).
Another useful aspect is that Iperius Backup allows you to schedule the automatic execution of these jobs. You can configure a recurring time (for example every night at 2:00 or every hour) in which the software will start the FTPS connection and synchronize the files. The operation can run as a background service on a dedicated machine (for example a Windows mini-PC always on) in a totally automated way. You can also set up email notifications to be notified in case of success or failure of the backup, so as to monitor that the video transfer is successful.
Thanks to Iperius Backup, the cloud video surveillance architecture is completed with a local backup of the videos : the videos remain primarily on the FTPS cloud (safe and accessible from anywhere via the Internet) but are also replicated locally for quick access or to create a second backup copy. For example, the files downloaded to the local PC could then be automatically copied by Iperius Backup to another media (a local NAS, an external disk, or even another cloud destination) using the additional copy function after download. In Iperius Backup, in fact, it is possible to configure multiple destinations in the same job: the software first downloads the files from Iperius Storage to the local temporary folder, then it can make copies to other configured destinations. In this way, a 3-2-1 backup strategy (3 copies, on 2 media, 1 of which is off-site) is easily implemented even for surveillance video flows.
From a local processing point of view , having the videos on a PC offers additional opportunities: for example, you could analyze the videos with more advanced video analysis software (including artificial intelligence services), or store them for longer on a large local archive, or integrate them into a centralized video management system (VMS). All this obtained automatically and in an integrated way thanks to Iperius Backup, without having to manually download files via FTP every day.
Conclusions
The integration of Reolink smart cameras with the Iperius Storage cloud and the Iperius Backup software allows you to create an extremely robust, secure and compliant video surveillance system. We have multi-level video protection : from local recording on the camera, to immediate copying to a secure FTPS cloud (protected by encryption and with high reliability), up to synchronization on a local or corporate archive for further backup and analysis. The entire flow is automated and optimized – thanks to the AI capabilities of the cameras, only useful events are recorded, and thanks to FTPS and Iperius the data travels and resides in a protected way.
This integrated solution eliminates the need for expensive proprietary cloud subscriptions for cameras , leveraging open standards and quality European cloud storage . At the same time, it offers greater control: the data is in your hands (on your Iperius Storage space) and in local copy, guaranteeing data sovereignty and availability in all circumstances. In terms of security and business continuity , such a system ensures that no critical footage is lost and that it is always possible to access it quickly when needed (for investigations, evidence, analysis).
In conclusion, combining Reolink + Iperius Storage + Iperius Backup means equipping yourself with a complete cloud video surveillance platform : easy to implement, secure (AI, FTPS encryption, certified data centers), compliant with European laws, and designed to protect your surveillance data with maximum reliability. A technological investment that increases the level of business or home security , protecting what really matters. Take advantage of this synergy between hardware and software to take your video surveillance infrastructure to the next level, with the peace of mind of always having a backup of your videos and full control of your data.
